One of the places of interest is the St. Mauritius Cathedral that was built in 1868
and the Nikolaus Groß museum, which is located next to the rectory and dedicated to the 2001 canonised miner and labour leaderd Nikolaus Groß.
Niederwenigern became part of Hattingen in 1970.
The St. Elisabeth hospital Hattingen-Niederwenigern is one of the major employers. The local football club the "Sportfreunde Niederwenigern" (SFN) plays in the Niederrhein district league. The Hattingen district of Niederwenigern had approx. 7000 inhabitants in 2006.
